I always had this little scenario play in my head, before Benny goes off to shoot the Courier.

It’s a late night at the Tops, Ean is about to call it a day after she’s hung around the bar, when suddenly Benny appears. He’s rushing down the hallway, almost running, even. She stops and greets him, “Darling, where are running off to? I was just about to ask if you’d like to have a drink with me.”

“No can do, baby,” he’d dismiss her, “A gent’s gotta seal a deal.”

She’s upset, but tries not to show it. But Benny catches on and whispers sweet nothings. He promises her that this would all be worth it, that he’d give her all of Vegas’ glory, all the lights and music she’d ever want. Live the life like the old pre-war movies. Make their dreams come true.

“But baby I can’t give you those lights if you let this gent stay,” he’d say, “Pussycat, daddy will come home, so you just stay right safe in your little suite and know I’ll be back.”

And she smiles and lets him go, he kisses her on the cheek and promises that he’ll make this work. 

“I know what I’m doing, baby.”
