I sooooo agree with the above statement. I think it’s silly when you can make straight characters gay and not have gay characters go straight. If you’re going to mess with them canonically, you should be able to go either way. That’s like saying you’re into yaoi but yuri is gross :/ it just doesn’t make sense to me. 

The problem is that when people make gay chars straight they never do it in a way that’s not horribly offensive. It’s always about how the gay characters have been “fixed”.

Making sure everyone knows my opinion before this goes further:

It’s not that I have any thing against making gay characters straight, or straight characters gay, it’s just that I don’t support crack pairings. That’s all there is to it. When you throw your female OC into a relationship with a gay character, it’s crack. You deliberately had to go out of your way to make their relationship up. Similar to when you throw a gay OC into a relationship with a straight man.

What I’m trying to say, is that it’s one thing if two characters in a game have chemistry and interact well. Then hell, ship them as much as you want- regardless of their sexual orientation. But it’s entirely different when you make up your own character, and pair them with a canon character. It just doesn’t work, and it doesn’t feel natural. 

In reality, I rarely support non canon/canon characters, which all of the above pictures are. I just find them hard to believe. Please keep that in mind.

The above is basically my opinion. 

To take away part of someone’s identity and morph it into something else is essentially changing the character. I’m big on canon. It’s also why I detest F!Courier/Boone — because making him cut short the proper time to grieve and jump right back into a relationship just feels… wrong. It’s out-of-character, and the complete opposite of what their canon characters would do. 

I think it’s all entirely in the writing.

I agree with the above two statements. If you’re going to create an original character and pair them up with a canon character, you’re going to have to write it well.

Fans already have an idea of the canon character’s identity, and changing a significant part of it (Arcade being heterosexual; Boone getting over his grief; Benny wanting to raise children etc.) is jarring.

It’s no longer the suspension of disbelief, you went ahead and shot that disbelief to the goddamned moon.

As hard as it is to find any good OC/Canon pairings, the one I like are obviously the better written of the lot. Usually ones that pay attention to canon and have the original character warp towards what has already been set in-game, not the other way around.
